Trailer Feedback positive

For our trailer feedback we wanted to see if our trailer was suitable for our was suitable for for our target audience and we also wanted have an idea of the things that they would expect from a trailer so that we could consider those aspects and incorporate them into our trailer.

From this feedback we managed to have an idea of what the audience thought about our trailer and the improvements that we needed to consider making.

My view about my character

Our main character Sinead, is a young 17year old girl who has moved schools and is now known in her new school as an outcast and gets bullied by the popular group. This then drives Sinead to want her revenge on the popular group but takes it to dramatic levels.

I feel that we have created a realistic character as many girls go through these insecurities and this character we have created explores all levels of female insecurities and bullying. She also explores the different emotions that many females might go through i.e confusion, doubt, and loneliness all of these express our character.

We thought that it would be good idea to show the development of Sinead throughout the trailer and explore her transformation from outcast to popular girl into revenge seeker.

Magazine Front Cover

Here is our final magazine front cover, here we have made a lot of changes. We started off by changing the colour of the background to black as it is a darker colour and it connotes the horror genre and we changed the colour of the typography to white so it stands out. We also added some prizes to catch the eye of our audience and barcodes and scanners so that the prices of our magazine. We also made this magazine cover a special horror edition in order for us to promote our magazine.

Magazine Front Cover (Draft)

Here is out first draft of our film poster, we were given some suggestions to place pictures in each section of the roll tape and to make it more sinister by using darker colours i.e black background. We also need to add a tag line and some prizes to catch the eye of our audience.

Trailer Structure

Three Point Lighting

Three Point Lighting
Today we learnt about three point lighting. Having three lights helps an image to look either 3D or 2D depending on the position of the lights and the colour. When filming the different positions and colours combine together to change the atmosphere of a scene e.g. red with dim lighting represents a sinister moment.

The aim of this lesson was to manipulate the positions and effect of lighting (Key Light)
The different types of lighting are:
-high key (key light)
-low key (fill light)
-back light

We used a red and blue gel light to create effects of a horror genre, the coloured gels helped to create the atmosphere of a scene.

Key light

Today, we were manipulating the position and effect of the key light by moving the key light around one person to get the perfect lighting for our trailer. we used three light in each corner at first so that we were able to capture each area of the person's body with the light so that there wasn't any shadow marks on their body.

Different types of lighting:
Key lights
Low key
High key
Paper reflection
Greece proof paper
Chiaroscuro effect

Using the different colour lighting helped us to change the mood and atmosphere of the shot, giving us more of a horror effect especially when we used the colour red,

In this image you see that we used a red lighting, behind the model we also has a white lighting to emphasise his body image and on the left and right side of him we place two more lights so that we could really bring out his body outline. using this lighting with the camera we got our model to walk backwards and forwards to see if we could get him looking like a dark figure, we found that the further away from the camera he was the more of a dark figure he would look. This really helped us with our horror trailer as it gives a sense of mystery to who the killer could be.

How to use a professional camera

Today we learnt how to use a professional camera, we started off by looking at all the different types of focus that we could have and what our intentions were for the different shot types.
It was explained to us that the bigger the hole is in the lenses the blurrier the picture becomes:

We were learning how to use 3 point lighting to make the lighting in our trailers just right so that we don't get any grainy shots, we also learnt how to use different colour lighting to enhance the genre e.g. by using red lighting we are insinuating the sense of danger which is also one of the codes and conventions of a horror trailer.

Film School

In Film's Cool today we began to edit our footage to stat creating our trailer.
Kyra and I began to edit the footage that we had already taken which was the killing scenes and we tried to edit them into a montage of killings, we decided to edit the ending as we felt that this would be the most challenging section to edit.
We found that trimming the clips in the right place and putting them together in an effective order the most challenging as it was hard to get the right timing of each clip that we had.

During this session we also go the chance to work with Ross Curran who is an producer and director for Thumbs Up production. He spoke to us about filming, and the different camera angels you could shoot at to make our trailers more effective and realistic.

Finding Music

Today we were looking for music to finish off our trailer, as we have finished the editing process we wanted to find music that goes with the structure of our trailer and also pushes across the fact that our trailer is a horror trailer.
As our character has a development through the trailer we wanted the music to represent each change that she makes so looking on free music. com we decided at the beginning to go with a up tempo sound to show the happiness of our protagonist, as she starts to turn against her friends we then wanted to hear a more sinister piece of music and then at the end have a build up of the music and finish off with a bang leaving the audience wanting more. However the ending of the music does not represent what our character has transformed into:

Film's Cool Kate hardie 2

During Today's Film school session my group had another chance to talk to Kate Hardie, she worked with us on developing our plot. She helped us to understand why certain things might happen and what could cause them to happen. this helped the group to have a clear understanding about why specific characters were included and why certain situations occurred. This then further developed our ideas and plot.

One thing that Kate couldn't understand was how a lonely/outcast girl wanted/became popular in the school?

Why would she (Sinead) suddenly want to become popular?

We explained to her that Sinead had just come from a Uniformed school to a Non-Uninformed school so she struggled to meet the fashion trends and standards of the other students, which is how they then isolated her as an outcast because had a different dress sense to them. As the people have judged her a made her an outcast this then reflects on the fact that she herself is an outcast. She doesn't want to be an outcast anymore and has had enough so she just wants to know what its like to be a popular girl with people surrounding her.

What is motivating her needing to be popular?

The fact that Sinead has been judged as a loser in her new school make her hungry for popularity as she doesn't fit in as the new girl so she wants to be apart of the popular girl group.

Film School / Case Studies

In order for us to get an idea of the type of horror film we wanted to go for we needed to look at a few other films so that we could have an understanding of how the structure of the films and trailers are going to be and look out for the different characters that we want to create.

From this Film's School session we looked at how to make a good plot for our trailers, we looked at a technique that was called 3P's which stood for 'Profession, Personality and Problem'. This technique helped us to understand that our trailer needs this in order for our story to make sense an for people to be able to relate to. We especially wanted young female girls to relate to this so we came up with a plot the expressed how young girls are so insecure with themselves that they then try to make others feel bad due to their insecurities. As we are young females who also have insecurities about ourself we were able to enhance the emotional side of this plot to emphasise the fact that these girls don't appreciate each other or even themselves.

Here are some of the films we looked at to get some inspiration on plot lines and characters:
·         Cabin in the woods
·         Scream
·         Never been kissed
·         Mean Girls

All of these films have a range of different aspects that we want to consider in our film e.g. we want the outcast girl from Never Been Kissed, the popular girl group from Mean Girls and the slasher effects from Scream and Cabin In The Woods.
