Make up Academy

Today we went to ... make up academy to learn some techniques on how to make our killings look realistic using make-up. We started off by telling the make up artist what killings we were going to be showing in our trailer, she then gave us advice on the different ways to create the looks of our killings. She started off by giving us a tutorial on how to create the look of someone grazing their knuckles.

Here she told us that in order for someone's hands to look as though they had been grazed severely we could us PVA glue mixed with paint of the same skin complexion (in our case brown) and paste it onto our hand, we should then let it dry and peel of specific areas to make it look as though the skin has been peeled off and then use some red paint to show the blood coming through.
all of these skills helped us with the reality of our killings so we now want to be able to put them onto our actors and so that the killings with our trailer look realistic. As Talia is a make-up Artist in our group she will be to do the special make-up effects.

Feedback

During this lesson we presented our synopsis to our teacher. we were told that our plot of the young outcasted girl wanting to be apart of a social clique and then killing her enemies sounded a lot like the film 'Carrie' and our interpretation of it sounded more like a teen slasher and didn't sound like a horror.

We then pitched our idea to the professional Kate Hardie. We told her what our teacher had told us previously about our trailer sounding more like a teen slasher than a horror trailer.
Kate advised us to firstly really think about the protagonist that we were creating, as we would want the audience to connect with the character and not hate her when they are first introduced to her. After hearing this information we began to think deeper about our protagonist and how we wanted her to be portrayed in our trailer.
We then told her our narrative behind the trailer. She explained to us that we need to think of our narrative more as it wasn't making sense.

So we went away as a group and thought deeply about our synopsis, so that it would relate to the horror genre and make sense to the audience.

Research on character

Looking at our character we knew that she has an obsession with being popular, we all agreed on this point.
I thought that maybe it would be a good idea for her to be the middle child in her family, when I researched how a middle child might feel. I found that they are constantly trying to get the attention of there parents and making them feel invisible I though that this would make our character feel isolated and also making her crave the attention of her parents forcing her to create this personality of a popular girl who is loved by everyone as she isn't that loved at home.

Using this information helped us to get an idea of how we could associate these characteristics and turn our protagonist into a killer.

TOP TEN research

This is the research that my group done for us to find different ways for our protagonist to be popular. We all felt that these techniques were good but didn't seem suitable for a horror film, so I came up with the idea that our protagonist (Sinead) has such a craving to be popular that she uses these techniques as they are written, however they go terribly wrong and everyone mocks her so she then uses these popularity techniques as killing techniques which then brings the horror genre into our narrative.

Inspiration for shots

Today we looked at different shot types that we could include in our Trailer. We looked at some other horror film e.g. roommate to get some inspiration and see what we would like to include in our trailer.

If you look at these different shot types you will notice that all the shots are very confined, this is why we specifically chose these shots because we want to create the sense that our victims feel trapped and that there is no escape for them, we will do this by using mainly close up shots this way you will be able to see the fear on the victims face.

We also came to the conclusion that we would have a montage at the end of our trailer including some of the different killings that we created, so that we can build up to an exciting ending and then leave the audience feeling excited and eager to see this film.

Here is another shot that we would like to use within our trailer. This shot gives us an idea where the action will take place and we will have our protagonist looking down on the scene to show that she is observing and sees everything that happens. We decided that our location for this section will be based in a school, so our protagonist will be looking down in  playground.
