Classification- Rating Our Film

A film can be categorised into seven different age ratings suitable for different age groups here are the six main ones:

U
The U symbol stands for Universal, meaning that any film that has been rated a U should be suitable to watch for audiences over the age of four years old. When a film has been classified as a U it usually means that they will allow very mild language such as 'damn and hell'.










PG
PG stands for Parental Guidance. This means that the film will be suitable for general viewing however some scenes might not be suitable for younger children. Parents are responsible to decide weather the film content is suitable for their child to watch. PG films should not be disturbing to children over the age of eight.


12 and 12A
12a means that anyone over the age of 12 can go to watch a film unaccompanied. The 'A' stands for accompanied and advisory. Anyone under the age of 12 is able to watch and 12a as long as they are accompanied by a Parent or Guardian. The 12 certificate is only for DVD, Videos and Blue-rays, 12A is only for cinema due to the fact that parents can accompany a child to the cinema but cant necessarily accompany their child when watching a DVD.



15
 A 15 means that o-one under the age of 15 is allowed to see a film rated 15. 15 will usually consist of:
Frequent Strong Language
Sexual Activity
Strong violence
Drug Taking






18
18 is a rating for Adults. No one under 18 is allowed to see a 18 rated film. An 18 film would usually consist of:
Very Strong Language
Strong Violence
String Portrayals of Sexual Content
Strong horror
Strong Blood and Gore
Real Sex
Discriminative language and violence
