Trailer analysis

Media questions:

2) why are we told who is staring in film? How is this information given to us? Why?

In a trailer we are usually told who is staring in the film when the person is a celebrity, this is used as a marketing tool for distributors to grab the attention of their target audience so they will be more likely to watch the film as they know the person who is the main character in the film.
In this particular trailer (The Roommate) we see the person who is starring in this film as they don't specifically say there name but we are introduced to the main character by a close up shot. There is also a co-star who is well and is on a tv show (Gilmore girls), she is we'll know for this tv show who is likely to get this film a lot of publicity due to the fact that she is already well known. this is one of the ways they present the information of the people who are starring in the film.

4) what clues does the music give us to what type of film the trailer is advertising?

At the start of the trailer the music is rather deceiving as it starts of nice and slow and then there is a clock chime and the music becomes sinister with the same tone going through the trailer under the dialogue. Over the music we then start to hear continuous screaming informing us that this is a horror film.

6) how does the speed if what we see compare to watching a clip from a film? Why is this? Does the speed alter through the trailer or stay the same?

In this trailer the speed of which we see different clips is very different to the clips we see in a film. In a film the clips will be longer with a range of different shot types at a range of angles whereas in a trailer the speed changes as in the beginning of a (specifically) horror trailer they usually start off slow and the as we get to the disruption section of the trailer the clips become smaller and the paste of the trailer gradually builds up and would usually become a fast montage of clips.

8) which is more effective in making you want to see the film, the poster or a trailer?

In my opinion I would say that the trailer is more likely to attract me to see the film because with the trailer its like a pre experience before you decide whether you want to watch the film or not, with the trailer it gives you a chance to see the visuals of a film and understand what it is about, and then you can decide whether you want to see it or not.

9) Choose and compare the trailers of the same length and count how many cuts and edits there are ?
In trailer one (the roommate) there are 105 cuts in this piece, the cuts started off slow at the beginning of the trailer then towards the end they suddenly got faster, this was to excite the audience and build up there adrenalin levels exciting them for what the film contained.
In trailer two (step father) there were 125 cuts, this is because compared to The Roommate there were a lot more uses of montage to again excite the audience whilst they are watching the trailer, so they are excited and feel to come and watch the film.
